What to say on the phone

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and it is the gap between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $39 service does not cost $39.

Plan for the total, not the base. The $21 gap between the two is the part people forget when comparing two salons.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. UV bed - level 1 maintained twice weekly in season works out to roughly $528 annually once gratuity is included.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

Dropping one visit a year saves roughly $13. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $132. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a cheaper provider before you switch.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $11, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and run your own break-even.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, usually a few dollars.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.

The costly errors, ranked
