The booking script, word for word

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped separately, typically a few dollars.
• On a $11 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.22. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent studios.
