How tanning is actually priced

Tanning is sold on a level ladder, not a single price. Beds are graded roughly one to five, with higher levels shortening session time and raising the per-session cost. Almost every pricing complaint in this category comes from comparing a level 1 price at one salon against a level 4 price at another.

Memberships and the three costs people miss

The monthly figure is rarely the whole cost. Three things sit outside it:

  1. Enrolment or annual fees — commonly $15–$60, charged separately from the monthly rate.
  2. Lotion — the largest surprise on a first visit, frequently $25–$90.
  3. Tier restrictions — higher-level beds are usually an upgrade on top of the plan rather than included in it.

The break-even test is one division: monthly fee divided by the per-session price you would otherwise pay. Below that many sessions a month, the plan costs you money.

Safety context

UV tanning carries documented skin-cancer and photoageing risk, and that is not a pricing question. Sunless options — booth spray and technician airbrush — carry no UV exposure and are priced comparably to mid-tier UV sessions, which is worth knowing before committing to a UV plan.

Anyone under 18 faces state-level restrictions on UV tanning, and several states prohibit it entirely for minors. Check your state rules before booking.

Frequently asked questions

How are prices on this site sourced?

Brand-specific amounts are recorded from official published pages and kept attached to the exact service and location they were published for. Separately, we show U.S. market ranges compiled from published industry pricing data. The two are always visually distinct and never mixed into one average.

Is Salons Guide affiliated with any of these brands?

No. Salons Guide is independently operated and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or compensated by any salon, spa or tanning brand covered on the site. See the advertising policy for how the site is funded.

How often is pricing re-checked?

Pages carry a review date; the current cycle was completed in August 2026. Published prices change without notice, so we treat every figure as research rather than a bookable quote and welcome corrections.

What should I do if a price is wrong?

Send it through the corrections form with the location and date. Corrections are logged, dated and applied to the affected pages rather than handled privately.
