Market ranges: what everyone else charges

A quote well above these bands is not automatically bad value - it typically means a different scope, a senior provider, or an costly metro. This table tells you which question to ask.

These bands describe the national market, not this page's subject. Use them to judge whether a quote is sensible, not as a price you can book.

Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $68 quote is costly in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

The variables that move the number

Ask about these when you book, not at checkout. All of them are easier to decline before you arrive than mid-appointment.

Five ways to overpay without noticing

All five are common, avoidable and quantified. None of this involves haggling — only asking one question at the right moment.

What to say on the phone

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
2. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

The sensible total, worked through

Every line below is routine and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At billed monthly, this service costs about $540 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Cadence reflects typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

Before hunting a lower-priced provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit per year is about $54 kept; two fewer is $108. Neither costs you any quality.

Break-even points for monthly plans

The honest test is your sensible visit count, not your intended one. Most of us overestimate by 30–50%. Take the number below and check it against how you behaved last quarter.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $16 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• On a $45 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.90. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• At a resort or hotel spa, check for an automatic service charge before adding a further gratuity.
• Cash reaches the provider fastest and is still preferred in most independent salons.
