Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $68 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Exactly what to ask when you book

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
2. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
3. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
4. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
5. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
6. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
7. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

Menu price versus final bill

Every line below is routine and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Annual cost of ownership

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Unlimited tanning membership maintained billed monthly works out to roughly $540 a year once gratuity is included.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the largest variable.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is generally the weakest one. Moving from the $45 median to the $20 budget end saves $360 a year, but so does simply stretching the interval by a quarter.

Is the monthly plan worth it?

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $16 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are frequently tipped on a separate line, generally a few dollars.
