Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and it is the gap between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
2. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
3. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are straightforward at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

From menu price to what you actually hand over

Every line below is standard and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

What unlimited tanning membership costs you over a year

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At billed monthly, this service costs about $540 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Deduct it if you track tips apart from service spend.

Before hunting a reduction, check the cadence. Going from 12 to 10 visits a year keeps approximately $130 in your pocket at the same quality of work.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $16 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask how tips are shared before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.

Five ways to overpay without noticing

These recur constantly in pricing disputes. All of them are fixed by a single question before the service starts.
