What the same service costs across the U.S. market

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $68 quote is costly in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $16 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

How much to tip on this service

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• An automatic service charge ought to be disclosed when you book. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped separately, usually a few dollars.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.

Avoid these before you book

What to say on the phone

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
2. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
3. "What is the exact price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"
4. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
5. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
6. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
7. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $183 service does not cost $183.

Twelve months of unlimited tanning membership, priced out

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Unlimited tanning membership maintained billed monthly works out to around $540 a year once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

Dropping one visit annually saves roughly $54. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $162. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a lower-priced provider before you switch.
