The same service, four different markets

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $16 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and overlook the four lines below it that end up setting the bill.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• On a $11 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.22. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped on a separate line, normally a few dollars.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.

Exactly what to ask when you book

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

1. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
2. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
3. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
4. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
5. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

What the bill looks like at checkout

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $362 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. UV bed - level 1 maintained twice weekly in season works out to around $528 a year once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in reality. Remove it if you prefer to budget on a separate line.

Before hunting a cheaper provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit a year is about $13 kept; two fewer is $26. Neither costs you any quality.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

The honest test is your sensible visit count, not your intended one. Most of us overestimate by 30–50%. Take the number below and check it against how you behaved last quarter.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $11 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and calculate your own break-even.
