Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so at booking. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask reception how tips are split before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though rarely refused.
