Exactly what to ask when you book

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
2. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"
3. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
4. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
5. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
6. "What is the precise price for spray tan (booth) at my hair length and density?"
7. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $39 service does not cost $39.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 10-14 days in season, this service costs about $648 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Remove it if you prefer to budget on a separate line.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a lower-priced provider. Moving from 12 visits annually to 9 saves about $162 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

How much to tip on this service

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent studios.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though seldom refused.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
