These 20 lines come from published sources and are grouped by what they actually are. Mixing a cancellation fee into a service price list is how misleading "average" figures are produced, so they are kept apart here.

A price documented for one location does not establish a national rate. Check with the location you intend to book.

Market ranges: what everyone else charges

These are U.S. market ranges compiled from published industry pricing data, not figures published by any single brand. They show where a given quote lands nationally.

National planning ranges. A quote outside these bands is not automatically wrong - check what is included before judging it.

The same service, four different markets

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Cash reaches the provider fastest and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so when you book. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.

These recur constantly in pricing disputes. Each is prevented by one question before the service starts.

What to say on the phone

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
2. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
3. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
4. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
5. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
6. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
7. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

What the bill looks like at checkout

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $39 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.
