Annual cost of ownership

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At twice weekly in season, this service costs about $528 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

How much to tip on this service

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so when you book. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.
• On a $11 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.22. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.

The booking script, word for word

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

6. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"
7. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"

One more at the desk: ask for the itemised total before you tap the card. Every line should match something you were told about on the phone.
