Exactly what to ask when you book

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
2. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
3. "What is the exact price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"
4. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
5. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
6. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
7. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

From menu price to what you actually hand over

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $45 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

Annual cost of ownership

A single $45 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained billed monthly, unlimited tanning membership becomes a $540 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Deduct it if you track tips apart from service spend.

Before hunting a less expensive provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit a year is about $54 kept; two fewer is $108. Neither costs you any quality.

Break-even points for monthly plans

The honest test is your sensible visit count, not your intended one. Most of us overestimate by 30–50%. Take the number below and check it against how you behaved last quarter.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.
• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• On a $45 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.90. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
