Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $16, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is generally a one-off larger amount.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped on a separate line, normally a few dollars.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.

Exactly what to ask when you book

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

1. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
2. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
3. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
4. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
5. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
6. "What is the precise price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"
7. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

Assumes 12 visits a year. Every number here scales with that visit count.
