Twelve months of unlimited tanning membership, priced out

A single $45 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained billed monthly, unlimited tanning membership becomes a $540 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• A late-cancellation charge buys you nothing. It is not tipped.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is normally a one-off larger amount.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask how tips are shared before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• On a $45 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.90. It matters less than whether you tip at all.

Exactly what to ask when you book

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
2. "What is the exact price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"
3. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
4. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
5. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
6. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
7. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.
