What to say on the phone

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 10 weeks, this service costs about $414 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 5 visits a year. Adjust the visit count and every figure here shifts with it.

Before hunting a cheaper provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit a year is about $83 kept; two fewer is $166. Neither costs you any quality.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• At a resort or hotel spa, see whether a service charge is included before adding another tip.
• Cash reaches the provider fastest and is still preferred in most independent studios.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.
