Market ranges: what everyone else charges

These are U.S. market ranges compiled from published industry pricing data, not figures published by any single brand. Use them to place a quote against the national picture.

National planning ranges. A quote outside these bands is not automatically wrong - check what is included before judging it.

The same service, four different markets

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $50 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Bands scale the $33 national median by published metro cost multipliers. Planning ranges, not quotes.

The variables that move the number

Ask about these at booking, not at checkout. Each is easier to decline before you arrive than once you are in the chair.

Annual cost of ownership

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Basic manicure maintained every 3 weeks works out to roughly $673 per year once gratuity is included.

Assumes 17 visits per year. Adjust the visit count and every figure here shifts with it.

The cheapest lever is almost always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 17 visits annually to 13 saves about $168 annually — normally more than switching salons would.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $33, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $33 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and check the maths on your quoted rate.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, generally a few dollars.

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and it is the difference between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

2. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
5. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
6. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.
