Context, not a price list. The point of these numbers is to tell you whether the quote in front of you is normal for the U.S. in 2026.

What basic manicure costs in your metro tier

Location is generally the largest single variable. The national median for basic manicure is $33; the same appointment can land near $23 in a small market and $58 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compare the headline price of two salons and ignore the four lines below it that actually decide the bill.

Every one of these is common, avoidable, and has a dollar figure attached. None of this involves haggling — only asking one question at the right moment.

The booking script, word for word

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

2. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
3. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
4. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

6. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
7. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are simple at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $64 service does not cost $64.

Annual cost of ownership

A single $33 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained every 3 weeks, basic manicure becomes a $673 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in reality. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

The lever most people reach for - switching salons - is normally the weakest one. Moving from the $33 median to the $20 budget end saves $265 annually, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are frequently tipped separately, typically a few dollars.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.
• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is typically a one-off larger amount.

The number alone seldom decides it. Line up the inclusions first — what is actually included — then compare the number.
