This table is market context, not a brand price list. It exists so you can tell whether a quote you have been given is typical, low or high for the U.S. in 2026.

Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $22 quote is costly in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Bands scale the $15 national median by published metro cost multipliers. Planning ranges, not quotes.

The variables that move the number

Ranking these matters. Nearly everyone compare the headline price of two salons and skip past the next few lines below it that really determine the bill.

How much to tip on this service

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped separately, typically a few dollars.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
2. "What is the precise price for nail art at my hair length and density?"
3. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
4. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

From menu price to what you actually hand over

Every line below is normal and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Worked at a $34 base with one add-on. Swap in your own quote and the proportions hold.

Plan for the total, not the base. The $20 gap between the two is the part people forget when comparing two salons.

Annual cost of ownership

A single $15 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained on about half of visits, nail art becomes a $180 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $15 median to the $5 budget end saves $120 a year, but so does simply stretching the interval by a quarter.

When a membership actually beats paying per visit

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $15 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $15 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and test this against your real visit count.
