Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Location is generally the largest single variable. The national median for basic manicure is $33; the same appointment can land near $23 in a small market and $58 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compare the headline price of two salons and skip past the next few lines below it that actually decide the bill.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 3 weeks, this service costs about $673 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is normally the weakest one. Moving from the $33 median to the $20 budget end saves $265 a year, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

The honest test is your realistic visit count, not your intended one. Most of us overestimate by 30–50%. Take the number below and check it against how you behaved last quarter.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and run your own break-even.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• At a resort or hotel spa, see whether a service charge is included before adding a second gratuity on top.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though seldom refused.
• On a $33 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.66. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.
