The same service, four different markets

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $50 quote is costly in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Six things that decide what you pay

Ranking these matters. Nearly everyone compare the headline price of two salons and overlook the next few lines below it that really determine the bill.

The booking script, word for word

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
3. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
4. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
5. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
6. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

From menu price to what you actually hand over

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $57 service does not cost $57.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Basic manicure maintained every 3 weeks works out to around $673 a year once gratuity is included.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the largest variable.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $33 median to the $20 budget end saves $265 a year, but so does simply stretching the interval by a quarter.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• A late-cancellation charge buys you nothing. It is not tipped.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask how tips are shared before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• At a resort or hotel spa, see whether a service charge is included before adding a further gratuity.

Mistakes that cost real money

These are the errors that show up repeatedly in pricing complaints. All of them are fixed by a single question asked before the service starts rather than after.
