Exactly what to ask when you book

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and it is the difference between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
2. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
3. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
4. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
5. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

Before hunting a reduction, check the cadence. Going from 5 to 4 visits a year keeps roughly $83 in your pocket at the same quality of work.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• A late-cancellation charge buys you nothing. It is not tipped.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so at booking. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though rarely refused.
