Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are frequently tipped separately, normally a few dollars.
• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.

The booking script, word for word

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

One more at the desk: ask for the itemised total before you tap the card. Every line should match something you were told about on the phone.

What the bill looks like at checkout
