The booking script, word for word

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

A single $45 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained billed monthly, unlimited tanning membership becomes a $540 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Assumes 12 visits annually. Every number here scales with that visit count.

Dropping one visit annually saves around $54. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $162. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a cheaper provider before you switch.

When a membership actually beats paying per visit

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $16, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and work out your own break-even.

How much to tip on this service

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped on a separate line, generally a few dollars.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
