What spray tan (booth) costs in your metro tier

Location is usually the largest single variable. The national median for spray tan (booth) is $45; the same appointment can land near $31 in a small market and $79 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Menu price versus final bill

Every line below is routine and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Worked at a $39 base with one add-on. Swap in your own quote and the proportions hold.

The rule of thumb: add roughly 59% to any menu price for spray tan (booth) to get your realistic out-the-door number.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 10-14 days in season, this service costs about $648 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a cheaper provider. Moving from 12 visits a year to 9 saves about $162 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

Break-even points for monthly plans

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $45 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

How much to tip on this service

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• On a $45 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.90. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.

The booking script, word for word

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.
