What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are hard to judge in the moment. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though seldom refused.
• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

The realistic total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $35 service does not cost $35.
