The real annual cost of keeping this up

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 7-8 weeks, this service costs about $462 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Cadence reflects typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

Before hunting a less expensive provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit per year is about $66 kept; two fewer is $132. Neither costs you any quality.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are frequently tipped separately, usually a few dollars.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
3. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
4. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
5. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

7. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.
