These are U.S. market ranges compiled from published industry pricing data, not figures published by any single brand. They show where a given quote sits nationally.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and overlook the four lines below it that actually decide the bill.

  Some premium menus price the finish on a separate line from the cut.

  Below-shoulder or very thick hair adds time to every step.

Twelve months of balayage, priced out

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Balayage maintained every 14-16 weeks works out to around $1,050 annually once gratuity is included.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

Before hunting a reduction, check the cadence. Going from 3.5 to 3 visits a year keeps roughly $210 in your pocket at the same quality of work.

How much to tip on this service

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
2. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
3. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
4. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
5. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
6. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

One more at the desk: ask for the itemised total before you tap the card. Every line should match something you were told about on the phone.
