Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "What is the precise price for classic lash full set at my hair length and density?"
3. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
4. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
5. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $100 service does not cost $100.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are frequently tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• On a $155 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $3.10. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a further gratuity.
