What nail art costs in your metro tier

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $22 quote is costly in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

A single $15 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained on about half of visits, nail art becomes a $180 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Assumes 10 visits annually. Adjust the visit count and every figure here shifts with it.

Dropping one visit annually saves roughly $18. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $45. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a lower-priced provider before you switch.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $15 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and run your own break-even.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are simple at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.
