Context, not a price list. The point of these numbers is to tell you whether the quote in front of you is normal for the U.S. in 2026.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and ignore the four lines below it that actually decide the bill.

  Regular polish, gel, dip and acrylic sit on different price tiers.

• Repair of a broken nail+$5–$15

  Priced per nail at most salons.

  Extending past the natural free edge is billed per length band.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
2. "What is the precise price for nail art at my hair length and density?"
3. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
4. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
5. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
6. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
7. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

The sensible total, worked through

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $57 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

Twelve months of nail art, priced out

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At on about half of visits, this service costs about $180 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 10 visits annually. Every number here scales with that visit count.

The cheapest lever is almost always stretching the cadence, not finding a lower-priced provider. Moving from 10 visits a year to 8 saves about $45 annually — normally more than switching salons would.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $15, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and test this against your real visit count.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• On a $15 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.30. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a further gratuity.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.

Every one of these is routine, avoidable and costed. None of them require haggling — only a well-timed question.
