What the same service costs across the U.S. market

Context, not a price list. The point of these numbers is to tell you whether the quote in front of you is normal for the U.S. in 2026.

National planning ranges. A quote outside these bands is not automatically wrong - check what is included before judging it.

The same service, four different markets

Rent and wages flow straight into the menu. Applying published metro cost bands to the $33 national median for basic manicure gives the following planning ranges.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ranking these matters. Most of us compare the headline price of two salons and skip past the four lines below it that really determine the bill.

  Regular polish, gel, dip and acrylic sit on different price tiers.

• Soak-off removal+$10–$25

  Removal of a previous set is its own line unless rebooking.

• Length and shape+$5–$20

  Extending past the natural free edge is billed per length band.

  Charged per nail or as a set surcharge.

• Repair of a broken nail+$5–$15

  Priced per nail at most salons.

What basic manicure costs you over a year

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 3 weeks, this service costs about $673 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Strip it out if you budget gratuity separately.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a cheaper provider. Moving from 17 visits a year to 13 saves about $168 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

When a membership actually beats paying each visit

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $33, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.

The costly errors, ranked

These recur constantly in pricing disputes. Every one is avoided by asking once before the service starts.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

1. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
2. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
3. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
4. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"
5. "What is the precise price for basic manicure at my hair length and density?"
6. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
7. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

Menu price versus final bill

Every line below is normal and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.
