What the same service costs across the U.S. market

None of these figures belongs to a brand on this page. They describe the wider market, which is what you need in order to judge a quote rather than just accept it.

Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Rent and wages flow straight into the menu. Applying published metro cost bands to the $33 national median for basic manicure gives the following planning ranges.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the exact figure in any one row.

The variables that move the number

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and overlook the four lines below it that really determine the bill.

• Nail art or French+$5–$45

  Charged per nail or as a set surcharge.

• Product system+$10–$45

  Regular polish, gel, dip and acrylic sit on different price tiers.

• Soak-off removal+$10–$25

  Removal of a previous set is its own line unless rebooking.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• An automatic service charge ought to be disclosed when you book. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.

Five ways to overpay without noticing

Every one of these is routine, avoidable and costed. None of them require haggling — only asking one question at the right moment.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and it is the gap between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
3. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
4. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
5. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
6. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
7. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"

One more at the desk: ask for the itemised total before you tap the card. Every line should match something you were told about on the phone.

The sensible total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $20 service does not cost $20.

The rule of thumb: add roughly 80% to any menu price for basic manicure to get your sensible out-the-door number.

Twelve months of basic manicure, priced out

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 3 weeks, this service costs about $673 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in reality. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is typically the weakest one. Moving from the $33 median to the $20 budget end saves $265 annually, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $33 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $33 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and check the maths on your quoted rate.
