From menu price to what you actually hand over

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $40 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

Plan for the total, not the base. The $22 gap between the two is the part people forget when comparing two salons.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 10 weeks, this service costs about $414 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is normally the weakest one. Moving from the $69 median to the $28 budget end saves $246 a year, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though seldom refused.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped separately, typically a few dollars.

Exactly what to ask when you book

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

1. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
2. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
3. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
4. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
5. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
6. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.
