Five ways to overpay without noticing

These recur constantly in pricing disputes. Every one is avoided by asking once asked before the service starts rather than after.

The booking script, word for word

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and it is the difference between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
4. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
5. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
6. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
7. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

The sensible total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $45 service does not cost $45.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and test this against your real visit count.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a second gratuity on top.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is normally a one-off larger amount.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
