Use this as a sanity check. If a quote lands well outside the national band below, ask what is included before concluding it is poor value — scope differences explain most outliers.

Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $68 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

The booking script, word for word

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

1. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
2. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
3. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
4. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
5. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
6. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

Menu price versus final bill

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $40 service does not cost $40.

Twelve months of spray tan (booth), priced out

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 10-14 days in season, this service costs about $648 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

Before hunting a discount, check the cadence. Going from 12 to 10 visits annually keeps roughly $130 in your pocket at the same quality of work.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• An automatic service charge ought to be disclosed when you book. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• At a resort or hotel spa, check for an automatic service charge before adding another tip.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask reception how tips are split before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
