Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. It takes under two minutes and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
2. "What is the precise price for basic manicure at my hair length and density?"
3. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
4. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
5. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $46 service does not cost $46.

Annual cost of ownership

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Basic manicure maintained every 3 weeks works out to approximately $673 per year once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in reality. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

Dropping one visit a year saves roughly $40. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $168. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a cheaper provider before you switch.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• On a $33 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.66. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• At a resort or hotel spa, check for an automatic service charge before adding a second gratuity on top.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
