The same service, four different markets

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $142 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Ranking these matters. Nearly everyone compare the headline price of two salons and ignore the four lines below it that really determine the bill.

Break-even points for monthly plans

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $95 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• An automatic service charge ought to be disclosed when you book. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask how tips are shared before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and it is the difference between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
4. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
5. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 7-8 weeks, this service costs about $798 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 7 visits a year. Change that number and every figure in this table moves with it.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 7 visits annually to 5 saves about $200 annually — normally more than switching salons would.
