Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
2. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
3. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
4. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
5. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
6. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
7. "What is the exact price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

The realistic total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $81 service does not cost $81.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At billed monthly, this service costs about $540 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

Before hunting a less expensive provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit per year is about $54 kept; two fewer is $108. Neither costs you any quality.
