Where the extra money goes

All of these can be declined in the sense that you can refuse it — but only if you know it is coming before you are in the chair.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though seldom refused.
• Cash gets to the provider quickest and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.

What to say on the phone

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
2. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
3. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
4. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
5. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"
6. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
7. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are straightforward at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

Menu price versus final bill

Every line below is standard and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Annual cost of ownership

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 6-7 weeks, this service costs about $1,008 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

The lever most people reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $105 median to the $70 budget end saves $336 annually, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

When a membership actually beats paying per visit

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $105 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.
