Annual cost of ownership

A single $105 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained every 6-7 weeks, 60-minute massage becomes a $1,008 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

The cheapest lever is almost always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 8 visits annually to 6 saves about $252 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

Break-even points for monthly plans

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $105 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though seldom refused.
• On a $105 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $2.10. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
2. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
3. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
4. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
5. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
6. "What is the exact price for 60-minute massage at my hair length and density?"
7. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $136 service does not cost $136.
