What the same service costs across the U.S. market

A quote well above these bands is not automatically bad value - it normally means a different scope, a senior provider, or an costly metro. This table tells you which question to ask.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

1. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
2. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
5. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
6. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
7. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are simple at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

Menu price versus final bill

Every line below is routine and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Percentages are hard to judge in the moment. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.
