Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At billed monthly, this service costs about $540 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Remove it if you prefer to budget on a separate line.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $45 median to the $20 budget end saves $360 annually, but so does simply stretching the interval by a quarter.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though rarely refused.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so when you book. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped separately, usually a few dollars.
