Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and it is the difference between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

6. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
7. "What is the precise price for basic manicure at my hair length and density?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

Menu price versus final bill

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $32 service does not cost $32.

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.
• A late-cancellation charge buys you nothing. It is not tipped.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, generally a few dollars.
• Cash reaches the provider fastest and is still preferred in most independent studios.
