Exactly what to ask when you book

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. Save the last one for emphasis — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so at booking. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.
