Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $68 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
4. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are almost always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

What the bill looks like at checkout

The rule of thumb: add approximately 62% to any menu price for unlimited tanning membership to get your realistic out-the-door number.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Unlimited tanning membership maintained billed monthly works out to roughly $540 a year once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Remove it if you prefer to budget on a separate line.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 12 visits a year to 9 saves about $162 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

When a membership actually beats paying each visit

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $16, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Before signing, run your own break-even.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Cash gets to the provider quickest and is still preferred in most independent shops.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so when you book. If you see one at checkout, ask whether it reaches the provider before adding more.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
