Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• If more than one person worked on you, ask reception how tips are split before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• Salons that add an automatic service charge should say so when you book. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
