What the same service costs across the U.S. market

Location is usually the largest single variable. The national median for basic manicure is $33; the same appointment can land near $23 in a small market and $58 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the exact figure in any one row.

The variables that move the number

Every one of these is optional in the sense that you can turn down it — but only if you know it is coming before you are in the chair.

How much to tip on this service

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a second gratuity on top.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.

The booking script, word for word

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are simple at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $34 service does not cost $34.

What basic manicure costs you over annually

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 3 weeks, this service costs about $673 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 17 visits per year to 13 saves about $168 annually — usually more than switching salons would.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

A membership is worth it above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $33 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.
