These 19 lines come from published sources and are grouped by what they actually are. Mixing a cancellation fee into a service price list is how misleading "average" figures are produced, so they are separated here.

Market ranges: what everyone else charges

None of these figures belongs to a brand on this page. They describe the wider market, which is what you need in order to judge a quote rather than just accept it.

These bands describe the national market, not this page's subject. Use them to judge whether a quote is reasonable, not as a price you can book.

The same service, four different markets

Location is normally the largest single variable. The national median for basic manicure is $33; the same appointment can land near $23 in a small market and $58 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Where the extra money goes

Ask about these when you book, not at checkout. Each is easier to decline over the phone than halfway through a service.

  Regular polish, gel, dip and acrylic sit on different price tiers.

• Length and shape+$5–$20

  Extending past the natural free edge is billed per length band.

  Removal of a previous set is its own line unless rebooking.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• On a $33 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.66. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though rarely refused.
• Cash reaches the provider fastest and is still preferred in most independent shops.

Avoid these before you book

All five are common, avoidable and quantified. None of this involves haggling — just one question asked at the right time.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "What is the exact price for basic manicure at my hair length and density?"
2. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
3. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
4. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
5. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
6. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
7. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"

One more at the desk: ask for the itemised total before you tap the card. Every line should match something you were told about on the phone.

The sensible total, worked through

Every line below is routine and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Illustrative. The 8.2% tax figure varies by state - several states do not tax personal services at all.

The rule of thumb: add approximately 62% to any menu price for basic manicure to get your realistic out-the-door number.

Twelve months of basic manicure, priced out

A single $33 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained every 3 weeks, basic manicure becomes a $673 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Deduct it if you track tips apart from service spend.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $33 median to the $20 budget end saves $265 a year, but so does simply stretching the interval by a quarter.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $33, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.
