The same service, four different markets

Location is normally the largest single variable. The national median for unlimited tanning membership is $45; the same appointment can land near $31 in a small market and $79 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

The booking script, word for word

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

1. "What is the exact price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"
2. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
5. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
6. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
7. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

What the bill looks like at checkout

Every line below is standard and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

What unlimited tanning membership costs you over a year

A single $45 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained billed monthly, unlimited tanning membership becomes a $540 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Assumes 12 visits a year. Adjust the visit count and every figure here moves with it.

Dropping one visit per year saves approximately $54. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $162. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a cheaper provider before you switch.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $16, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Break-even = monthly fee / per-visit price. At $16 a visit the maths is simple enough to do at the counter.

You can test this against your real visit count against your actual visit count.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• On a $45 service, the difference between an 18% and a 20% tip is $0.90. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a second gratuity on top.
